Facts and attribution

Regulatory claims are checked against the responsible authority’s original records. Company announcements are reported as company statements. News reports and social posts are checked for their origin, date, context and supporting evidence.

UK, EU and individual-country rules are identified separately. An application, demonstration, trial permit or planned launch is not described as unrestricted approval. A product name does not establish its driving capabilities.

Uncertainty stays next to the claim

A material claim that remains unconfirmed is labelled in the headline and body where needed. We do not say a subject has made no comment unless the checked evidence supports that statement. Where another outlet sought a response, its account is attributed to that outlet.

The initial publisher register

The Guardian and The Independent are in the initial newspaper-source register. Reuters is listed separately as a news agency. These entries identify publishers and standards references; they are not a guarantee that an individual report is correct.

Two independent draft reviews

Before an article is eligible for publication, two reviewers independently assess its source support, impartiality and clarity without being told how the draft was produced. Material changes require a new review. These checks assess the article; they do not establish its authorship or replace verification of the underlying facts.

Updates and corrections

Articles state when their sources were checked. Material corrections must be explained and timestamped. Source-check dates are not publication dates.
